I recently went to Goa cycling expedition organized by youth hostel India ( YHAI ) from 17th December 2017 to 25th December and I am making this post to tell you all why you must go to this cycling expedition at-least once in a lifetime.
Goa is one of the most happening tourist destination in the country, famous for its beaches, lifestyle especially nightlife of Goa and its food. But there is another side of Goa, that hardly anyone of us has seen. Through this Goa cycling experience, you have changed to explore the total different side of Goa. Even thinking about the curvy forest roads, riding on the beach and eating delicious local Goan dishes is making me nostalgic.
About the program
It is 8 days program in total with approx 40-50 km of cycling every day. Accommodation, breakfast, lunch & dinner all are provided by the YHAI apart from the geared cycle. From my experience I must say, YHAI is very well planned organization and executed the program very well. As you don’t have to worry about stay and food, cycling experience takes new height.
Let me share few details about the route and what things you should bring with you.
YHAI Goa cycling Program Schedule:
DAY 1: Report at Base Camp Sports Authority Ground, Campal, Panaji.
This was a relaxing day, we settled into our tent, meet new people and to my surprise, I also met Goa’s Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Parikar. It was a big surprise to meet him without obstruction of security and getting a selfie with him. We went visiting some places in Goa. As we ae all pure vegetarian people, we had full Gujarati dish at “bhojan” restaurant in Panjim. Totally recommended for tasting authentic Gujarati Food.
TIP: if you are Gujarati as well, and finding it difficult to have vegetarian food, worry no more. here is the complete list – Pure vegetarian restaurants in Goa
DAY 2: Morning exe, Orientation, Test ride & Joy Ride in the City
We started our day with morning exercise on the beach, followed by test ride in Panjim city. Evening time was well spent at Dona Paula!! This is the point for ferry pickup for next day.
DAY 3: Mormugao Harbour to Assolna Camp (Ambelim Play Ground)[45 Km]
The first day started with a ferry ride to Vaso de gama, from there we started our cycling. The first day of cycling is an experience in itself. we did our cycling on 28 km stretch of beach. It was my first experience of cycling on the beach, with noon sun cooking me literally.
DAY 4: Assolna Camp to Netravali Camp ( savargal ) [41 Km]
This stretch of road passes through small villages and starting of the forest area. We enjoyed the lush green fields on both side of the road but the heat was way higher for winter season.
DAY 5: Netravali Camp to Collem Camp [50 Km]
DAY 6: Collem Camp to Bondla Camp [45 Km]
DAY 7: Bondla to Base Camp [54 Km], Valedictory Function
DAY 8: Check out after Breakfast.
The Cost of this 8 days cycling expedition is 5500/- which is way cheaper compare to private tours.
Some important tips
– A rucksack is provided by YHAI, but also carry a small backpack to carry things like wallet, mobile and food items to keep them handy and keep your pockets empty while riding.
Carry as less as possible, especially clothes. my suggestion is 2 set of quick dry jersey & shorts, 2 nightdress, 3 set of socks, 1 small napkin, 1 towel, 1 cap. 3 camp side had a river flowing nearby, so if you wish you can also wash your clothes.
-It is also good to carry a torch, power bank, Bluetooth speaker, sports camera, memory cards. Some of them are optional, just mentioning here in case you find it useful.
