Cycling scenario in India is changing, more and more Indians are taking long rides in the form of BRM now a days. BRM being a self-supported ride, here are some of the essential items you must carry on your cycle.
1. Mobile Phone
It is essential to have a communication device, especially on Indian roads. You never know when you need it – be it flat tire or calling for help or updating about your ride status to fellow riders.
2. Hand Pump
Experience speaks!! had to ditch 2 long rides and call my dad to bring
If you don’t have one, your net BRM ride is a great excuse to invest in good handpump. I use Icetools handpump – superb aluminum body and pumps up to 110 psi.
3. ID card and Money
Carrying a ID card is must. make sure you have emergency contact number and your blood group written in local language somewhere on backside of it. We never wish any such emergency arises, but it is good to be prepared for the worst.
4. Spare tube & puncture kit
Handpump is of no use if you don’t care puncture kit and spare inner tube with you. I always carry a spare tube. The cheapest inner tube option for you is – Giant Inner tube at the cost of 190/- for your road bike.
Puncture kits generally include – patches, tube & tire remover lever.
Loose break, changing seat post height or any other mechanical issue you have with your bike – Multitool is the answer for that. You must have it or atleast have allen key suitable for your bike.
6. Water bottle
Hydration is important for your optimum performance. Ideally, you should be consuming 0.5 lit water every hour, considering the Indian heat you can even need more. carrying 2 water bottles is a necessity for your BRM ride.
Also, make sure you carry ORS or energy drinks with minerals. due to sweating you not only dehydrating but losing minerals as well. consequently, you need to replace them.
Just like your car need petrol, your body needs fuel in the form of glucose. Without proper nutrition, you can complete long BRM rides.
Always carry energy-rich food items like Homemade
I follow the simple rule to avoid dehydration and fatigue on my long rides
Drink before you are thirsty, Eat before you are hungry
8. Saddle bag or Frame Bag
you definitely cannot carry all the above items anywhere else but in a saddle bag or frame bag.
I am using this amazing BTwin frame bag since I started riding. Never disappointed me. It is spacious enough to carry all of my essential items.
9. Head Light & tail Light
night riding is amazing – less traffic, cool breeze makes it very enjoyable. But only when you are carrying a bright enough light with you. Otherwise, it becomes extremely unsafe and against BRM rule to ride without Headlight.
Invest in a good headlight at earliest, doesn’t matter you do BRM or not. Headlight and taillights are
